FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
Many people that are either pro-choice or pro-life demonstrate "peacefully". There are many pro-life people that go to abortion clinics and approach patients because, "As long as they protest peacefully, without physically blocking a patient's way, the couple has a right to be there" (Caruana, 6).
Doctors at clinics such as planned parenthood are used to seeing a wide array of women whom are pregnant under many different circumstances, such as "a woman over forty whose.. genetic test revealed that the twelve-week-old fetus in her womb is developing abnormally" (Caruana, 6).
The Supreme Court has the task of deciding whether or not an action is unconstitutional. They did so in the Roe vs. Wade court case when they decided that, "The right to privacy includes a woman's right to decide whether or not to have children .The right to privacy, and, therefore, the right to abortion, is protected by the Ninth and Fourteenth amendments" (Caruana, 31).
The positive outcome of creating this new law for abortion includes that, although the rate of legal abortions rose steadily until 1980, "Illegal-abortion rates dropped dramatically, from over a million a year to several thousand" (Caruana, 33).
There is often a clash between the national and state government. State legislators often lobby for more power which is denied by the other. The verdict of Roe v. Wade, "allowed states to restrict abortion in order to protect the potential life of the fetus, unless the mother's life or health was endangered" (Caruana, 39).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
The Abortion Debate in essence describes the development of abortion in America over a period of time. It includes legislation such as the Roe v. Wade court case, and how it affected society after laws had been put in place. It includes a clash between the national and state legislatures as well as the clash of those that are pro-life and those that are pro-choice, and the demonstrations that they participated in.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Editor: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the editor.

Claudia Caruana is the author, does not have a biography at the end but she seems on top of her accuracy and the information she brings forth.

Attachment: Does the author or editor have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative?

This article is simply informative, the author does not have anything to gain.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
There is no bias in the author's writing, this book simply serves as a timeline for events that took place in the history of abortion in America.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
Yes, the author does cite many references at the end of the book. Her citations add credibility because they originate from professionals in this field with valuable credibility and qualifications regarding abortion.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

This book is perfect to show the chronological order in which events took place regarding abortions in America. It gives a solid background on legal conflict as well as social conflict, and how the two intermixed.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
It is important for my audience to understand when a human life actually "begins", which is when a sperm cell fertilizes an egg, "known technically as the 'zygote,' containing the full set of forty-six chromosomes required to creat new human life. Conception has occurred" (Bender, 17).
Shettles, with a Ph.D and M.D. from Johns Hopkins University, strongly opposes abortion, and supports his position by saying, "I do so, first, because I accept what is biologically manifest-that human life commences at the time of conception-and, second, because I believe it is wrong to take innocent human life under any circumstances" (Bender, 20).
Emotional bonds create a huge difference in the decision making of an abortion patient; two women had "decided against abortion after seeing ultrasonic pictures of their unborn children... such an experience precipitated the onset of maternal bonding..." (Bender, 31).
Conservative women have a hard time understanding why any woman would want an abortion, because women who "embrace and celebrate their own women's devotion to childbearing have little difficutly appreciating why abortion is a moral issue, they recognize and cherish the deep and fundamental values at stake in these decisions" (Bender, 53-54).
It is difficult for legislation to rule that abortions are illegal, since there are problems that may occur as a result, "who would suggest that we repeal the laws against such crimes because the laws are so often broken?" (Bender, 77).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
This book takes a conflict and dissects it with numerous arguments coming from different credible sources. It discusses moral issues as well as legal issues and different viewpoints and solutions that may fix the problems. The author himself does not take any sides, only expresses the perspective of other prestigious doctors and well regarded scholars.
Credibility of Source:
Author or Editor: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the editor.

The author is David Bender, and he does not have any titles or training in anything besides writing. He only writes about others that have had training in the field of abortion.

Attachment: Does the author or editor have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative?

This is simply an informative book.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
There is no bias, he just states the views and opinions of other scholars and doctors.
References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
Yes, he cites all of his references and they add to the credibility greatly.
Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project? I can use this to argue for my solution to the moral issues of abortions and also come up with counter-arguments to refute the opposing side.

Interview with Terri M., Westwind Health Services 3/14 HAPPY PI DAY!

What do you do here?
Assistant Office manager, help with pre-op, accounts, collections, paperwork, dates. Take blood type, make sure it is not RH- which can affect ability for blood transfusion in next pregnancy.

Is this organization pro-life or pro-choice? Personal feelings on the topic and why?
Pro-choice, but has early terminations only. Believes in pro-choice because if law were to make abortions illegal then old methods would be used: no anesthesia, coat hangers, etc. Westwind only helps women receive abortions if it is in the first trimester, 12 weeks. Terri believes the women should go through pregnancy and put them up for adoption. Many pregnancies result of incest, rape, alcohol, drugs. STD's are at an epidemic scale, she believes some children are better off as terminated especially because state would take care of them which is tax payer's money.

What is standard procedure for abortions?
Take blood, assess blood type, medical history, conditions that could make it unsafe for abortions. They have the right to refuse abortion if safety is an issue. Two ways to terminate. 1: abortion pill, which can be used in under 7 weeks, cervix separates placenta from wall of uterus which delivers the baby early so that miscarriage takes place. The second is going in and suctioning out the contents of conception. Antibiotics are used to prevent infection, which can cause problems for later pregnancies. The pill does not always remove all of the contents.

Do patients often go through psychological stress before or after?
Yes, it is very common. They offer counseling for them. The women often speak of guilt that they are taking a life and are sometimes afraid of not being able to deliver later. It is standard procedure for the pre-op to include counseling for patients.

Personal thoughts on opposing views?
Terri used to be pro-life. The change occurred when she dealt with women's stories; rapes, incest, mental illness, not taking care of the body correctly, abused or neglected. Also, this would lead to improper abortions which may result in many deaths. Better to get one properly than bootleg.

In your opinion, do women receive abortions too often?
Yes, unwanted abortions should not occur period. But it does often even with education, birth control, STD testing, they try to slow them down. There is no reason to repeatedly get pregnant, there are many organizations such as planned parenthood, others for both men and women, where Plan B is free and so is birth control. Help is out there and people are not willing to even take precautions.

On average, how many women come in a day?
It varies, sometimes not even one comes in a day. On average, about 5-20 women come in per month. More during holidays; pregnancy and holidays have a direct correlation to one another. This office is personal when it deals with patients, visits are confidential and protests do not take place as they do in a public center such as planned parenthood.

Have you been personally affected by this topic? How?
Terri says it, "breaks her heart" to see young women get unwanted pregnancies and then abort. They don't need to go through this at all, it takes a strain on the body and puts future pregnancies at risk.

Do you support the legality of abortions? Do you think there should be certain restrictions?
If we stop abortions, the dirty coat hanger method will be used again. It is better to have a board certified doctor with the proper equipment perform the abortion than the bootleg method. Sterile environment is also needed, with anesthesia. In this state abortion is illegal if the fetus has been in development for 24 weeks.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
This author touches on the fact that many people base their arguments for pro-life and pro-choice on ethnic and religious backgrounds and states that "ethnic and religious concerns have been included in debate, but those have no right to influence the right of choice that the women have" (Hamilton).
The author also includes a previous court case that increases her credibility, she refers to the Roe vs. Wade and the result, "which actually made abortion legal" (Hamilton). This shows that the speaker knows he rhistory and when abortion was made legal.
She continues to inform the reader on how one can receive an abortion safely and properly, by referring to a place known as Planned Parenthood, where they "discuss in detail the procedure of abortion and the possible risks, outcomes, and time in which they can be performed" (Hamilton). Clearly she has done her research since she has an outlet for those who need an abortion.
She provides more options for women who need a solution, that "information on the topic can be requested and provided by lots of different sources. Women can also refer to physicians as well as private and public organizations and societies to help them address any concerns that may appear" (Hamilton). This shows that the author's intention is to help her audience and inform them by providing solutions.

She justifies herself as a non-bias writer by stating, "Providing abortion information to women means giving them choice and the most accurate abortion information is being presented to women by the health care providers as they are just in the right position for doing this" (Hamilton). Her understanding and ambiguity on the topic helps with her credibility because she does not show bias.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
The source basically gives options for women as to how they may decide whether or not they want an abortion. It gives examples for places that they can go and options that they have for whether they are pro-life or pro-choice. The source only wishes to inform women on how they may approach the problem of dealing with an abortion.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
Megan Hamilton, she does not seem to have any training and she does not cite any references. This takes away from her credibility but it is a website about medical issues. The purpose of the site is to inform, and ezine articles funds it.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
No, the author does not, it is simply informative she has nothing to gain.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
No, the author does not favor either side, she argues that women have the right to choose whether they wish to abort or keep their child.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
The author does not cite references, this does take away from her credibility.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I may use this source as an example for why certain websites cannot be trusted with abortion information because  although this author does not have a bias perspective, she is not well informed and clearly does not seem very educated given her bad use of language and very general perspective on the topic. She does not get into specifics on the topic.

For most women, abortion is known to have serious "physical, emotional and spiritual consequences", and the majority of them claim that they "wish they had been told all of the facts about abortion and its risks" (Option Line).
Physical risks include, "bleeding, infection and damage to organs." The website goes on to explain that as the fetus develops more, the procedure becomes more risky, "medical complications occur infrequently in early abortions, but increase with later abortions" (Option Line).
Although the website explains that bleeding after an abortion is common, another form of "bleeding known as hemorrhaging" which "one in 100 women use surgery to stop the bleeding" (OL).
The damage to the organs that the website also explains that the "cervix and/or uterus may be cut, torn, or damaged by abortion instruments" which can lead to "excessive bleeding requiring surgical repair" (OL).
Another rare complication that may occur in abortion includes death, "In extreme cases, complications from abortion (excessive bleeding, infection, organ damage from a perforated uterus, and adverse reactions to anesthesia) may lead to death" (OL).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
This website widely discusses the dangers that come with abortion and why or why not a person should go through with one. It provides detailed information on when an abortion may be performed safely and when it runs a higher risk of complications. It strictly sticks to facts and how one may safely get an abortion if they feel they want one.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
The author is not given, and Option Life seems to fund the site. They do cite many sources that are legitimate and the purpose of the site is simply to inform the audience about abortions in general.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

There is no bias in this article.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
Yes the author cites references in the writing and they definitely add to the credibility, they cite many sources.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
This article can be used for the logos part of my project, simple facts that I can state about abortion are abundant in this article.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):

Planned parenthood very strongly believes that "Abortion is a safe and legal way to end pregnancy" (P.P.) and stands behind that, making a stance as pro-choice.
According to planned parenthood, "There are two kinds of abortion in the U.S.- in-clinic abortion and the abortion pill" (P.P.) they further support pro-choice by giving options for abortion.
Planned parenthood gives support to pro-choice through an attempt by popular fallacy, "Abortions are very common. In fact, more than 1 out of 3 women in the U.S. have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old" (P.P.), so if everybody is doing it, so can I.
Planned parenthood also takes a side with pro-life, showing ambiguity, they say that "If you are trying to decide if abortion is the right choice for you, you probably have many things to think about.. learn more about parenting and adoption" (P.P).
Again they show that they are not bias by stating that, "Only you can decide what is best for you. But we are here to help" (P.P.).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Planned parenthood is an organization that attempts to provide help for those who are pregnant whether or not they want an abortion. They have locations all over the country and are willing to work with anyone to help them make a decision and the process after. I do not know why they do this besides the fact that they would like to help people with their pro-life or pro-choice decisions.
Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

I do not know who the author is or what training they have had. From funds, the only thing that I can determine is the donations they receive. It is .org, so they are non-profit I assume. Maybe the government helps with funding.
Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

It is simply informative, its only purpose seems to be to help others.
Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

At first I thought that the website was pro-choice, but when I read more I was able to understand that they also address those who are pro-life and solutions towards how to take care of a child if kept.
References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

From what I can see, no other sources are cited. This does subtract from the credibility but it seems like a very legitimate organization, one that I have heard of before. So I do think it is a credible site.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

This source can be used to see from both sides of the spectrum. It addresses arguments for pro-life and pro-choice, and offers solutions for both.
